So there is this really cool idea that I've been meaning to try for some time. Really short stories. I don't remember exactly where I first read them. I think it was in the back of a comic book, but I'm not sure. It may have just been part of a book, anthology, whatever. Anyway, what this guy had done was write these one-page horror stories. I recall them as being accompanied by pictures, which is why I think they may have been in the back of a comic book. Anyway, I though it was a really cool idea. I did a couple one day. Really short stories. Less than a paragraph each. Kind of dippy. That was years ago. Don't know what happened to them.
But, really short stories is just one of those things I've always been meaning to get back to. There are two recognized very short story formats. There is the one hundred word and the two hundred and fifty word vignettes. I've done one hundred word stories in the past. I've never done a two-fifty. Never that interested in pursuing it. I mean there is something amusing in the pursuit of the short form. It can be really fun to do; however, I didn't want to spend all my time counting words. I just wanted to go for it.
So I've set myself a very basic format. Try to keep it short. Less than a page is good. Don't sweat the details.
So I scribbled out three little vignettes today. Nothing fancy. Nothing overly original for that matter. Just cute. Amusing. Short. I'm going to post them to this here website at the rate of one a week so this could all be over in three weeks. We shall see if I do any more. It's just something to do when I feel like it.
It's also another way to try and keep the creative juices flowing. The web comic was a lot of fun and really did a lot to rejuvenate the old creativity but then getting everything into .gif format turned out to be a real hassle. I mean I am going to go back to String Finger Theatre. I just don't know when. There are only so many hours in the day, and the old day job takes up way too many of them.
I've also tried to do the continuing story route. That's a really fun way to go. Just write a little something every week and post it to the sight. Except when the story gets totally carried away from me. Except when my cute little continuing story turns into this major epic. Very depressing, too. That's how The Faire Folk of Gideon has been described to me. And, I am going to finish it. After I'm done with the prequel to The Magic Flute, I am going to return to the strange little world that Matty Drake is stuck in.
But I still wanted to do something in the odd moment or some such thing. When I'm too tired to concentrate on bigger things. When I can't focus on what I'm writing so I have to go back and rewrite the whole mess later anway. Something to keep me going. Keep the juices in motion even when I can't deal with greater things. Just keep it to a page. Try to write a dozen sentences. Doesn't even have to be that coherent. Just interesting.
Anyway, I thought it might be fun. We shall see.
